This refers to him being krishna as peacock feather is associated to Lord Krishna. Early in the film you see Bajirao aiming at a peacock feather. Bajirao is presented as Bhansali’s krishna. Infact, at his birth, the family pandit exclaimed that he will have a short-lived (alpayu) and a controversial life.Īlthough most of it was true but nonetheless his journey as a warrior and and as husband/lover is magnificent.
He is also the first brahmin minister to become a warrior and be undefeated. He is a superlative warrior and an intelligent statesman.
Now come to the final primary character, Peshwa Bajirao, The Great. He could have simply reduced Kashi’s character to a miniature or as an obstacle, but when you talk about love it is important to give credit to all sorts of love even if takes the limelight away from the main couple’s story for some time. This is his boldest move to focus on the third wheel along with the major love story of Bajirao and Mastani. Kashibai’s evolution from being a gawky child woman to a mature, dignified individual is the biggest curve of all the three characters and i give points to Bhansali for showcasing that aspect in the film. This is also an extension of her complaint against Mastani, for snatching her husband away from her. Earlier in the film you see Bajirao talking about his guroor(pride) and now Kashibai says that her ‘guroor’ has been snatched away. Due to these aspects, Priyanka gets the most sympathetic lines and situations. Even when Bajirao is not well and is on his death bed, she has the large heart to embrace him despite mistaking her to be Mastani, this shows her strength and undying love for him. I also feel this line also refers to her unconditional love for Bajirao. In this scene priyanka makes huge impact and makes you empathize for the character. The Dialogue ‘Aap humse humari zindigi maang lete hum khushi khushi de dete, par aapne toh humse humara guroor cheen liya’ refers to her pain and anguish of her being betrayed by Bajirao. her husband’s infidelity has not just hurt her but also questioned he self-respect and dignity. And this journey of Kashibai could only be potrayed by a seasoned actress like Priyanka.
Her character goes through everything love, devotion, affection, concern, insecurity, obsession, betrayal, jealousy, redemption, hurt and finally liberation. Now consider Kashi, she is the family chosen hindu wife of the Peshwa the loyal, devoted wife who’s love for Bajirao is described by the love and devotion of Rukmini for Krishna. Another symbolism to represent her and her love to be immortal. Mastani wrote her own destiny including her death… ‘Mastani apni taqdeer khud likhti hai’ she says. Although her urdu diction was out of place but she managed to say dialogues with the right amount of vigour. I think she managed well in adapting Mastani’s character. Mastani is your uncoventional hindi film heroine and Deepika was given the task of enacting and potraying a character which so subtle, sublime and passionate yet you see turmoil in her eyes. Apart from being hypnotically beautiful and courageous, she is also a caring mother, dutiful wife and graceful dancer. Bhansali shows Mastani as an equal hero like he showed Bajirao in the film. Her love for Bajirao is like the love of Radha for Krishna. She is someone who follows her heart and can do anything for love. Mastani is not your traditional Bhansali heroine( Kashi is, Mastani isn’t). The three principal characters Bajirao, Mastani and Kashibai are full of contrast, layers and symbolism.Ĭonsider Mastani, she’s a half muslim warrior princess who is drop dead gorgeous (just look at her in the songs mohe rang do laal and Deewaani Mastani) and yet has the bravery of a warrior. This underlying essence of the film is beautifully achieved by fantastic direction, overwhelming dialogues, eye popping cinematography, detailed and layered costumes, consistent screenplay ,ace choreography, soulful music and most importantly the marvelous performances by all the three actors. They struggle to make their love triumph amid opposition from his conservative family how their love story becomes immortal is the rest of the story.īajirao Mastani speaks the universal theme that love conquers everything and it has no religion. Bajirao Mastani was not just a film but a captivating cinematic experience.īajirao Mastani tells the story of the great maratha Peshwa Bajirao (Ranveer Singh), married to Kashibai (Priyanka Chopra), falls in love with Mastani(Deepika Padukone), a warrior princess in distress.
